MASCO and its member partners, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Harvard Medical School, launched OUTSIDE programming for the first time beginning the week of May 20th, 2019. OUTSIDE is an area-wide member placemaking program meant to create and enhance outdoor spaces where employees, patients, visitors, researchers and students can benefit from free and accessible programming.

Beginning Monday, July 13th, 2020. the yellow umbrellas and outdoor furniture are back once again to encourage those working and visiting the LMA to take a pause from their day.

Due to COVID-19, programming and events have been significantly scaled back and the following precautions are in effect to ensure that proper safety and sanitation measures will be met:

  • Tables, chairs and umbrellas are placed in adherence with proper social distancing measures.
  • Hand sanitizing and sunscreen stations are available at multiple sites.
  • Site ambassadors will regularly clean the tables and chairs in an effort to sanitize these frequently touched surfaces.
  • Signage is in place to reinforce each institution’s and the CDC’s rules.

The 2020 program features food trucks at two sites. To prevent crowds, musicians will travel between sites limiting performance time at each location; the musical acts will only feature soloists and duets and do not include any vocalists, brass, or wind instrument performers. Art frames are on display and now people can add to the sidewalk gallery with chalk art, for which disposable gloves are provided. See the schedule below for the weekly program activities by site.
