The Medical, Academic and Scientific Community
Organization (MASCO) has worked with its member institutions, who together represent
almost every aspect of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA), to assess core opportunities
and challenges facing the LMA. MASCO retained Goody, Clancy & Associates to assist in this effort.
This Executive Summary is an abstract of the
assessment and is organized into four sections:
A. An Introduction provides an overview of
opportunities and challenges facing the LMA.
B. A Description of the LMA focuses on existing
economic, social and physical contexts.
C. A Needs for Growth and Economic
Development section reports on the institutions’ needs for growth to serve patients, students,
and scientific research and describes some of the dynamics and pressures for growth.
D. A Core Challenges and Opportunities for the
Future section summarizes the seven core challenges, the resolution of which are central
to the LMA’s long term ability to thrive.
E. A Conclusion and Next Steps section describes
goals for the LMA planning process.
