Carpools are made up of two or more individuals commuting from the same area to the Longwood Medical and Academic Area and who work about the same hours as you. If you are in a carpool, you share the driving, the parking expenses, and the cost of gas. If you are in a carpool and need to get home for an emergency, then CommuteWorks will pay for your taxi ride to your home (gratuity not included) as apart of the Emergency Ride Home Program. CommuteWorks will also offer you up to five parking vouchers per month for $5 each as part of the Pool-Aide Program, if you need to drive in occasionally by yourself. Carpools of two or more people are also eligible to use special carpool lanes on Interstate 93 southbound from Medford to Boston and on the Southeast Expressway (I-93) south of Boston. Commuter groups of three or more people using the MassPike and the Sumner/Callahan Tunnel are eligible for reduced tolls through the FAST LANE TM Carpool Program. Vanpools are comfortable and cost-effective forms of transportation for groups of 9-15 people. If you are in a vanpool, you drive your car to a central location by your home and from there, you get into a van and you are chauffeured to the Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA). CommuteWorks has arranged with MASSRIDES, to coordinate vanpooling services for the LMA. Vanpools receive free on-site parking in the LMA, which makes vanpools convenient and less expensive than driving alone. Commuters in vanpools are eligible for the Emergency Ride Home Program and for the Pool-Aide Program. The Emergency Ride Home Program is designed to pay for your taxi ride home (gratuity not included) if you need to get home for an emergency. If you need to drive into the Longwood Medical and Academic Area by yourself a few times a month, CommuteWorks will also offer you up to five parking vouchers per month for $5 each for off-site parking, as part of the Pool-Aide Program.
