PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION  •  DRIVING DIRECTIONS  •  LMA AREA MAP


The Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA) is served by Boston's public transportation system. Please visit their website at www.mbta.com for trip planning and transit updates.

Green Line:

Riverside- "D" Line: Service between Riverside and Government Center (Blue Line) via Newton, Brookline, LMA (Longwood and Fenway stops), Kenmore Square, and Park Street (Red Line).

Arborway- "E" Line: Service between Heath Street and Lechmere via LMA (Brigham Circle, Longwood/Hospitals, or Museum of Fine Arts stops), Copley, Park Street (Red Line), Government Center (Blue Line) and North Station (Commuter Rail).

Red Line:

To Park Street then to the E or D branch of the Green Line to LMA.

To Andrew Station then Cross-town #3 (CT3) bus to LMA.

To Harbor Point /UMASS stop to Route 8 bus to LMA.

To Kendall Square stop to Cross-town #2 (CT2) bus to LMA.

Orange Line:

To Ruggles Station to 8, 8A, 47, CT2, CT3 bus to LMA.

 

 
8/8A: Bus service between Harbor Point/ UMASS (Red Line), to Kenmore Square via Boston City Hospital and Ruggles Station (Orange Line and Commuter Rail). 8A begins at Dudley station.
39: Bus service between Forest Hills, Copley, and Back Bay (Orange Line and Commuter Rail). This route follows the " E" Arborway Green Line route along Huntington Ave.
47: Bus service between Boston Medical Center and Central Square via Dudley Square, and Ruggles Station (Orange Line and Commuter Rail).
60: Bus service between Chestnut Hill and Kenmore Square via Brookline Village.
65: Bus service between Brighton Center and Kenmore Square via Brookline Village.
66: Bus service between Dudley Square and Harvard Square via LMA (Brigham Circle), Brookline Village and Union Square-Allston.
CT2: Bus service between Kendall Square (Red Line) and Ruggles Station (Orange Line and Commuter Rail) via LMA.
CT3: Bus service between Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Andrew Station (Red Line) via Boston Medical Center.
 

Commuter Rail service is available to communities north and west of Boston via North Station and communities west and south of Boston via Ruggles Station, Back Bay Station, and South Station.

The closest commuter rail stop is Ruggles Station.  MASCO offers free bus service to LMA employees from this station via Ruggles Express Shuttle Service.  MBTA buses 8, 47 and CT3 also travel via Ruggles Station to the LMA.

LMA Shuttles

MASCO operates various shuttle routes that connect the LMA with major public transportation stops and park and ride locations.  Specific shuttle information including schedules and stops can be found by clicking on the links below.

From the North, via Logan Airport:

  • Take the Mystic River Bridge (Route 1), Routes 93 or 28 and follow the signs to Storrow Drive.
  • Continue along Storrow Drive (1.5 miles) to the exit marked "Fenway - Route 1," turn left and then a sharp left up the exit ramp.
  • Turn right at the fork marked "Boylston Street, outbound."
  • Continue along Boylston Street until the major intersection of Park Drive and Brookline Avenue with Boylston Street. Bear left onto Brookline Avenue.
  • At the third traffic light from this point, turn right onto Longwood Avenue.

From the West, via Massachusetts Turnpike:

  • Exit at Prudential Center/Copley Square. Stay in the left lane of the exit and follow the signs for Prudential Center; this will lead you onto Huntington Avenue (Route 9).
  • Follow Huntington Avenue West for 1.2 miles to Longwood Avenue and turn right.
  • Go past two traffic lights and the Brookline Avenue intersection.

From the West, via Route 9:

  • Take Route 9 to Brookline Village.
  • At the Fire Station on Route 9, bear into the far left-hand turn lane.
  • At the next set of traffic lights, turn left onto Brookline Avenue (Brook House apartments will be on the right).
  • Continue up Brookline Avenue onto Longwood Avenue (fifth set of traffic lights). Turn left onto Longwood Avenue.

From the South, via the Southeast Expressway:

  • Take the Massachusetts Avenue exit and look for signs for Melnea Cass Boulevard and the hospital area (Longwood Medical Area (LMA)). You are now on Melnea Cass Boulevard.
  • Travel one mile on Melnea Cass Boulevard and turn left onto Tremont Street.
  • At the first set of traffic lights, turn right onto Ruggles Street.
  • At the second set of traffic lights, turn left onto Huntington Avenue.
  • At the second set of traffic lights, turn right onto Longwood Avenue. Pass through two traffic lights, past Brookline Avenue intersection.

From the South, via Routes 1, 28 and 138:

  • On Route 1, continue to Jamaica Way.
  • From Route 28 and 138, take Morton Street for 1.3 miles to Arborway (rotary).
  • Take Arborway for 1 mile to Jamaica Way (rotary).
  • Continue on Jamaica Way for 2.2 miles to Brookline Avenue.
  • Turn right onto Brookline Avenue and continue to Longwood Avenue (third traffic light). Turn left onto Longwood Avenue.
