2009 Bike to Work Week: “Bike the Bay State”

The 2009 Annual Bike to Work Week is quickly approaching and
will be taking place this year from May 11 – May 17.
Register today at www.baystatebikeweek.org

The Longwood Medical Area has the reputation of having some of the area’s most dedicated bike commuters. During last year’s Bike Week, we had 468 LMA commuters register for Bike Week (the largest number of participants in Longwood history). In fact, during last year’s Bike Week, registered participants from the LMA biked an average of 8.75 miles a day, 4 days a week for a total of approximately 16,369 miles!

2009 is looking to be even a more successful Bike Week than ever before. The theme for this year’s event is “Bike the Bay State” and once again, CommuteWorks is partnering with the City of Boston, City of Cambridge, Harvard University and other area Transportation Management Authorities to organize the 2009 Bike Week events in the Boston/Cambridge area.

In addition to the area-wide events taking place, CommuteWorks is happy to offer special events just for Longwood area bike commuters. All employees and students of MASCO’s member institutions are eligible to register for bike week and take advantage of the following events:

  • REI Bike Commuting Clinic: Join instructors from The REI Outdoor School and learn some tips on bike commuting and urban cycling. This free clinic will be held from 12:00 – 1:00 PM on Friday April 3 in the Jimmy Fund Auditorium located at 35 Binney Street. All attendees will also have the chance to win a $50 gift card to REI. Please RSVP to commuteworks@masco.harvard.edu if you plan on attending.

Additional bike clinics are scheduled for employees/students from any of the Colleges of the Fenway and from the Harvard Medical Campus. Please contact CommuteWorks for additional information.

  • Annual LMA Bike Week Breakfast: Stop by on your bike ride to work for some free Brueggers Bagels and to pick up your free 2009 Bike Week T-shirt. REI bike technicians will be on hand again this year providing free bike inspections. The Bike Breakfast will take place on Thursday May 14, at 375 Longwood Avenue from 8:00-9:30 AM.

  • Bike Week Bash: We will be hosting the annual Bike Week Bash at Flattop Johnny’s (One Kendall Square, Cambridge). Enjoy some free food and billiards while mingling with other Boston area bike commuters. We will also be raffling off great biking prizes to people who attend.

  • Commuter Challenge: By registering for Bike Week, you are helping your institution compete with other similar sized organizations in the Boston and Cambridge area to see who can get the most employees participate in Bike Week. During last years Bike Week, both Dana Farber and the Harvard Medical Campus won the Commuter Challenge in their categories.

  • Greater Boston Area Events: Registered participants are eligible to participate in all other city wide events scheduled to take place during Bike Week. For more information, please visit www.baystatebikeweek.org
